This English Premier League season returning is in doubt as six new cases of Coronavirus were confirmed. The news comes just days after the teams returned to training in preparation for the resumption of the season. Although the date of 19 June has been earmarked for a comeback, that seems unlikely following the new cases.

Players say ‘no’ to return

Players have voiced their opinions on the matter of returning and by the sounds of it, if they had their way, the season would be cancelled.

Spurs midfielder Danny Rose has criticized the league for treating players like “lab rats.” Currently on loan at Newcastle United, Rose went to social media yesterday, saying “I’m dying to get back to football but people are suggesting we should return like we’re guinea pigs or lab rats. To experiment and see if it works or not.”

Watford captain Troy Deeney has gone a step further and has refused to return to training over concerns for his son’s health. The Hornets captain said “we’re due back in this week. I’ve said I’m not going in. It’s nothing to do with financial gain. My son is five months old and he’s had breathing difficulties. I don’t want to come here and put him in more danger.”

And the list of players not returning to training continues as Ngolo Kante was given permission to skip training over coronavirus fears. The Chelsea world cup winning star has been granted compassionate leave, following a heart attack scare two years ago when he feinted during training. Kante has good reason to be weary of returning, as his brother passed away from a sudden heart attack.

Borris will make it happen

One can just imagine how much revenue the Premier League is losing and missing out on. Apart from the frustration hardcore (Liverpool) fans are experiencing with no football, Borris Johnson’s government will have a huge feather in their cap – socially and economically – if they manage to get the EPL on track and moving sooner than later. Who knows, they may even get a few Liverpool fans of the Liberal Democrats or Labour that make the switch to the Conservatives. Here’s to the EPL returning – make it happen Boris!
